WCCD Student Kelly Merritt Named Oberndorf Scholar by Phi Theta Kappa

Dothan, AL (12/12/2025) — Wallace Community College-Dothan (WCCD) is proud to announce that Associate Degree Nursing student Kelly Merritt has been named an Oberndorf Scholar by the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and has been awarded a $1,500 Oberndorf Lifeline to Completion Scholarship.

Each year, 15 Oberndorf Lifeline to Completion Scholarships are awarded nationwide, making this recognition a distinguished honor for exceptional students like Merritt.

"I am wholeheartedly honored to be named an Oberndorf Scholar," said Merritt. "This scholarship supports more than my education. It strengthens my voice as a leader, a first-generation student, and a grandmother, proving that passion has no expiration date.

"As long as you have a passion and a will, the path will always be made," Merritt continues. "I am committed to using this opportunity to serve, inspire, and lead with a true heart. Thank you from the depths of my heart to PTK and the Oberndorf Scholarship committee for believing in me and in dreams that never expire."

"Kelly's commitment to her education, her leadership in campus organizations, and her passion for serving others make her truly deserving of this honor," said Daymesha Reed, WCCD Student Life Coordinator and PTK Sponsor. "We are incredibly proud of her achievement and excited to see the impact she will continue to make."

The Oberndorf Lifeline to Completion Scholarship supports Phi Theta Kappa members who face unexpected financial challenges that could prevent them from completing their first college credential, associate degree, or certificate. The scholarship is named for benefactors Rosemary and Lou Oberndorf. Lou Oberndorf co-founded METI, a global leader in medical education technology used in community colleges and the world's top medical schools. He also serves on the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation Board of Trustees.

"Without a doubt, the Oberndorf Scholarship has a tremendous impact on the lives of these hard-working, high-achieving students, making it possible for them to complete their associate degrees," said Amanda Gorman, Executive Director of the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation. "We are grateful to the Oberndorf family for their commitment to helping students achieve their educational goals. Congratulations to all of the scholarship recipients!"
